Impact of the South Asian Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Program (SAADAP) on diabetes knowledge, risk perception and health behaviour

Objective: Evidence suggests the increased prevalence of diabetes among South Asian (SA) adolescents is due to their genetic risk profile. The Adolescent Diabetes Awareness Program (SAADAP) a pilot intervention for SA youth in Canada with family history type 2 mellitus (T2DM). We sought investigate changes (1) knowledge and associated factors, (2) perception (3) health behaviours participating SAADAP. Design: One-group pre-test, post-test design informed by commitment community-based participatory research (CBPR). Setting: Sixty-eight aged 13–17 years T2DM participated SAADAP clinical-community setting Canada. Method: Pre–post questionnaires were administered evaluate perceptions behaviours. Analyses restricted 49 participants who attended at least four education sessions. Results: mean age was 14.5 years, 57.1% self-identified as girls. difference about definition, symptoms complications from baseline post-intervention 3.32 out 21 ( p < .001) youth. There significant increase learning factors post-intervention. Almost 60% exhibited no change after intervention. Approximately two-thirds self-reported positive completing programme. Conclusion: showed promising outcomes raising improving diabetes. Larger controlled trials longer follow-up are recommended support expand on current findings.
